Transurban 360
With a number of large scale projects well underway, Transurban came to Auggd in search of a solution that would enable high level stakeholders to be transported to the project site without ever needing to don a hardhat and boots.
The initial launch for the product would occur during a company awards function with the intention of the activation being reused both at future events, and as required by individual stakeholders. As such, the product needed wide distribution, utilising readily available hardware. Virtual reality was considered for maximising immersion, however headsets were inappropriate for the corporate event, and limited future availability.
The solution was found with an AR experience that placed users directly in a true, 1:1 scale project environment, allowing them to explore the project both by walking as though they were on the ground itself, or teleporting to points of interest. Four experiences were created, each capturing the progress for a major, ongoing project.
To best capture the projects, photogrammetry was chosen as the process for generating 3D geometry. Whilst somewhat labour intensive, the process utilised images captured on the actual site to reconstruct the scene with a level of fidelity and accuracy that could not be matched by other methods.
Thousands of photographs of each site were captured in structured day shoots, and used to reconstruct accurate mesh and texture data for the projects. These huge datasets were then optimised and remapped to make them suitable for use within the mobile deployment environment, balancing ease of use with presentation of the most immersive environment.
Where available, BIM data was utilised to create 3D views of future development stages, and integrated as a selectable view within the experience, allowing users to switch between the physical site environment of the day, and future stages of completion.
A challenging project that was complicated by a short delivery timeline and the distribution of project sites across multiple states, careful management of resources was key to the successful delivery of the product.
